Vote For MarkUp Magazine

Dear Readers!

We invite you to participate in the voting round of the Game Maker Blog Community Awards, in which MarkUp is listed in two different award categories!

You can vote for MarkUp Magazine as the best source of Game Maker tutorials and/or examples and the best periodical publication awards.

We have worked hard to produce a publication that is worthy of your vote. We believe that -- with our latest developments and improvements -- we are worthy of your decision. MarkUp Magazine is the Game Maker Magazine with the highest amount of released issues, and the publication with the most frequent issue releases (out of the 'heavy' content magazines).

Not to mention, MarkUp Magazine is the only Game Maker magazine that caters for the elite expert developers and strives to present content that is beneficial for advanced developers, including advanced tutorials, editorials, guides, and other articles.

We hope you give us your votes!

Thanks,
The GMking.org Staff

MarkUp in print?

I'll be brief.

I was thinking it would be very cool if MarkUp could exist not only in the cyberworld, but also in real, living, PRINT!

I know. I know. Hold the applause. (That was a joke)

Ah. If life were that simple. Elaborating from my point of view, I understand YoYo is a not-for-profit organization (or something of that sort), and money may become an issue. I don't know. I'll let those guys at MarkUp decide. Maybe there could be a subscription fee, or something.

I believe there are several advantages to having a physical copy of MarkUp. First of all, you could refer to it any day of the week.

If your computer breaks, and you can access those downloaded PDFs

all you have is your laptop and version seven of GM

you were building that hyper-uber-mega awesome game

you need it done in three weeks (which is the approximate return time of your precious computer)

all the information was in issue 12 of MarkUp.

What do you do? You whip out your MarkUp issue 12 in physical form!
Although this would seem like a 1 in infinity chance, it is entirely possible.

Also, MarkUp makes great reading material.

So, I've put a poll way up there (^Up There^). Please poll your opinion, and if you can, reply.

I would love to hear from the MarkUp staff, if at all possible.

Dedication forever,
Blunger1

Let a string
P="y=2*x-1" or "y=x*x-3*x-1"

Does anyone have any idea how to find multiple values of "Y" by substituting different values for X in Game Maker efficiently?

An idea I had was doing something like this:

CODE

x=/*choose value for x*/
P=string_delete(P,0,2);
y=execute_string("return "+string(P));

[edited, thanks Bart]
However, we all know how slow execute_string can be, especially when used in a loop, etc. and thats exactly what I want.

Anyone has any idea how to parse math properly in Game Maker and still allow for multiple values of the variable to be used?

My Attempt
What I've done so far is make a system that separates different terms and finds dependent and independent terms (It does so properly by checking for "(" and ")"s, so terms are properly separated). For independent terms , I have no problem finding their values and adding them using execute_string() since that would be repeated once. My basic script adds all independent together and calculates their value, then creates a new "equation" with only the depdendent terms and a single independent term. The basic idea is to be able to create the independent terms in an execute_string-less method, and output the number and add it to the independent value.

I dont know where to go next for the dependent terms.

If anyone can help as to where to go next, or can simply tell me if there's a better approach you have in mind. Here is the original announcement post:

QUOTE

We are glad to announce that MarkUp Magazine Issue 13 has been released! With schools and universities reaching their peaks, things had to slow down for this issue. This of course did not effect the quality of the final outcome which we are very confident will please you. Even with a smaller quantity of content in such busy times of the year, we're pretty satisfied after seeing the final result, that the content will please you.

Updated MarkUp Magazine Website

http://markup.gmking.org

While the MarkUp Magazine website has always been powered by Drupal and followed the current issue structure, we have recently updated the entire site's layout and page structure as to take full advantage of Drupal as well as make it clearer, simpler, and easier to navigate in. Staff Applications and information about Contributions are now hopefully easier to access.

MarkUp Writer & Admin Portals Created

Private location

While this isn't general community news, we're happy to announce that we've created a MarkUp Writer & Admin Portal that will hopefully add more organization and easier management to the magazine and will hopefully simplify and speed up the process of issue creation for the magazine, as well as the amount of contributions received.
Programming stuff, C++/C#/XNA?

Hey Guys,
I was just cruising around the net and I began thinking about all the programming possibilities. I stumbled upon XNA, as far as I know, it's like a Library for C# to allow you to creating xbox 360 games and games other for Microsoft systems. So I have this re-newed energy for learning C# now, so much so that I dug out an old C++ for dummies book, and actually began reading it. I'm on chapter 3 now, and I'm getting on pretty well (I'm still a little sketchy on the whole Float and Double variables though).

So now what I posted for, I'm looking for some advice as for where to make my next move. Stop with C++ and switch to C# or go and buy "XNA: Novice to Professional" (or 'review' it ) or what? Does anyone know any good tutorials for that kind of stuff or have any hints/tips? I'm all ears/eyes.

Thanks for reading, I'm open to all suggestions.

Contribute to MarkUp Magazine!

Dear MarkUp Magazine Subscribes,
MarkUp Magazine has released this one-year anniversary Issue back in February - almost one month ago - and we're already working on the future issues!
We came to you asking for contributions for the one-year anniversary issue and the response we recieved was indeed spectacular! The excellent response we received has encouraged us to ask you - our readers - for contribution once more, to achieve excellent releases for all of our future issues, not just the one-year special.
Therefore, and we need your help to do that! Wondering how you could help? That's simple; you could help in many areas, including:
A.
